Irene Ip is a visual artist based in Berlin, who works in theater, film and photography.

Irene was born in Bologna before relocating to Germany at an early age.

She studied stage design at the Minerva Academy of Arts, Netherlands and a semester stage and costume design at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan.

Once her studies were completed, she was employed as set and costume design assistant at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel and the Münchner Kammerspiele.

After this experience Irene began to work on her own projects, collaborating with director Felicitas Brucker at the Thalia Theater, Schauspielhaus Wien as well as Schauspiel Frankfurt.

Since 2010 she has also worked as a costume designer for cinema and television productions. She designed the costumes for Burhan Qurbani’s episodic film Shahada, which was selected for the Berlinale and numerous other international festivals.

She has a long-standing collaboration with director Robert Lehniger.

Joint productions have included the Staatsschauspiel Dresden and the Deutsches Theater Berlin, as well as opera productions at Theater Bremen and Deutsche Oper Berlin. In their work, they explore the intersection of theater, film and digital media.

In the 21/22 season, Irene started collaborating with the dance company Unusual Symptoms under the direction of various choreographers, such as American choreographer and performance artist Faye Driscoll.

For Argentinian writer and director Lola Arias she created a spacial walk in installation, in which the audience could enter three immersive rooms.
